Romance
351 recordings, 1946–2020, 32 performers, 75 composers
The romance is a chamber vocal genre: a lyrical poem set for voice with instrumental, usually piano, accompaniment. In Armenian music it is tied to Romanos Melikian (1883–1935), regarded as the creator of the Armenian romance; here his songs and those of Alexander Spendiaryan sit alongside Russian romances by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Many of the recordings are by the baritone Pavel Lisitsian, a Bolshoi Theatre soloist from 1940 to 1966, and many of the texts are by the poet Avetik Isahakyan.
