Born in Beirut. In 1946 Tigran Levonyan repatriated with his parents. In 1958 he graduated from the Yerevan Theatre Institute, and in 1977 from the opera directing department of the Moscow Institute of Theatre Arts. He studied singing with his future wife, Gohar Gasparyan. He trained at the famous La Scala theatre in Milan. From 1962 he was a soloist of the A. Spendiaryan National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. From 1970 to 1977 he was at the same time a stage director there, from 1977 the chief director, and from 1991 to 1999 also the artistic director. In 1984 Tigran Levonyan was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Armenian SSR. He was a professor at the Yerevan State Conservatory. He died in Yerevan.
