Born in the castle of Tsovk in the Tluk district of Armenian Mesopotamia. From 1166 he was Catholicos of All Armenians. Nerses Shnorhali left a rich literary and musical legacy (epic poems, songs, riddles based on motifs of Armenian folklore and on historical facts). The number of his sharakans (hymns), tags (odes), gandzes and phokhs exceeds 100. Shnorhali writes with great love and respect about Armenian national heroes and patriotic kings. He died in Hromkla, Cilicia.
